Zelensky announced reshuffle in the government, Ukraine’s Prime Minister resigned

July 12, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko resigned on Sunday. Announcing new changes in the government of Ukraine, President Zelensky said that he has offered the former Prime Minister a new and important post. Zelensky, who remains in office under martial law because elections cannot be held during wartime, has been reshuffled from time to time to bring new momentum to his administration.

Sviridenko, who has been Ukraine’s economy minister, became Prime Minister in July 2025 at the age of 39. He played a key role in securing a minerals agreement between Ukraine and the US, which is considered an important way to link US interests to Ukraine’s security.

Proud to have the honor of leading the government

In a statement on social media, Sviridenko said he was proud to have the honor of leading the government during the most difficult period in Ukraine’s modern history. He also said he had discussed next steps with Zelensky, but did not provide any further details.

He said that I am ready to serve the Ukrainian state and carry out every task aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s position, protecting our national interests and bringing closer to a just peace.

Ukraine is changing political strategy

Zelensky announced his resignation in a post, saying that Ukraine is changing its political strategy. He also said he had given Sviridenko the opportunity to lead a new, important area in Ukraine’s relations with a key international ally.

Describing the upcoming reshuffle, Zelensky said that each priority area of foreign policy will be assigned to a specific person with sufficient experience who will be able to implement our consensus and the expectations of the Ukrainian public at the level of leaders. The Ukrainian leader also said that there will be changes in the top positions of Ukraine’s law enforcement agencies.

After the announcement, Zelensky met with several senior officials, including Energy Minister Denis Schmihal, Interior Minister Igor Klimenko and Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov. The reshuffle, which Zelensky has not yet described in detail, would be the fourth major restructuring of his government since the beginning of Russia’s all-out invasion.

Ukraine continues to attack Russian oil sites

On the other hand, on Sunday, local officials said that one person was killed and three others were injured in a Ukrainian attack in south-west Russia. This attack took place when Kiev’s forces were continuously bombing Russia’s oil facilities.

Governor of Russia’s Samara region, Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, said that a child was also among the injured. He also said that along with residential houses and apartment buildings, an industrial site (about which no specific information was given) was also damaged in the attack. Russian media reported that the target of the attack was the Syzran oil refinery in that area.

Many people shared such pictures, in which clouds of black smoke were seen rising above the refinery. The refinery is owned by oil and gas giant Rosneft and is located about 800 kilometers (500 miles) east of the border. Kyiv’s forces have targeted it several times.

A tanker damaged by drone attack

Meanwhile, Governor of Russia’s Rostov region, Yuri Slusar, said that a tanker has been damaged by a drone attack in the Azov-Black Sea Sea Canal. Slusar said the tanker was empty and there was no risk of oil leakage. Ukraine’s drone attacks on oil refineries and other infrastructure across Russia have created a massive fuel crisis. There is a shortage and rationing of petrol in many areas, and drivers have to wait for hours to get their vehicles’ tanks filled. In response, Moscow has intensified its bombing of Kiev and other cities, exposing Ukraine’s vulnerability to ballistic missile attacks.

Attack on Odessa and Chornomorsk ports

Ukrainian President Zelensky has described the attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure as part of Kiev’s long-range sanctions campaign. This campaign is being carried out in response to Moscow’s refusal to stop its four-year-long attack on its neighboring country. Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Sunday that it had attacked the Odessa and Chornomorsk ports in the Odessa region of Ukraine. Ukrainian officials have not yet commented on these claims.
