Yogini Ekadashi fasting story
Arjun said – “O Trilokinath! I heard the story of Nirjala Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month. Now please tell me the story of Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Ashadh month. What is the name and significance of this Ekadashi? So now tell me in detail.”
Shri Krishna said – “O son of Pandu! The name of Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Ashadh month is Yogini Ekadashi. By fasting on this, all sins are destroyed. This fast gives enjoyment in this world and salvation in the next world. O Arjun! This Ekadashi is famous in all the three worlds. By fasting on this, all sins are destroyed. I tell you the story told in the Purana, listen carefully – A king named Kuber used to rule in a city named Alkapuri. He was a devotee of Shiva, who used to bring flowers for worship. One day, he brought flowers from Manasarovar and started having fun with his wife.
While waiting for Hemmali, when it was noon time for King Kuber, he angrily ordered his servants to go and find out why Hemmali had not yet brought flowers. When the servants found out about him, they went near the king and told – “O king! That Hemmali is having fun with his wife.”
Hearing this, King Kuber ordered Hemamali to be called. Trembling with fear, Hemamali appeared before the king. Seeing him, Kuber got very angry and his lips started fluttering.
The king said – “Oh wretch! You have insulted my most revered deity, Lord Shiva. I curse you that you will suffer in the separation from your wife and go to the mortal world and live the life of a leper.”
Due to the curse of Kuber, he immediately fell from heaven to earth and became a leper. His wife also separated from him. After coming to the mortal world, he suffered many terrible hardships, but by the grace of Shiva, his intellect did not get tarnished and he even remembered his previous birth. Suffering many hardships and remembering the misdeeds of his previous birth, he set out towards the Himalayan Mountains.
While walking, he reached the ashram of sage Markandeya. That sage was a very old ascetic. He looked like another Brahma and his ashram was as beautiful as Brahma’s assembly. Seeing the sage, Hemmali went there and after paying obeisance to him, fell at his feet.
Seeing Hemmali, sage Markandeya said – “What bad deeds have you done, due to which you have become a leper and are suffering terrible pain?”
Hearing Maharishi’s words, Hemmali said – “O great sage! I was a follower of King Kuber. My name is Hemmali. I used to bring flowers from Manasarovar every day and give them to Kuber at the time of Shiv Puja. One day, due to being engrossed in the pleasures of sexual intercourse with my wife, I lost all sense of time and could not deliver the flowers till midday. Then he cursed me that you would lose your wife and go to the mortal world and suffer as a leper. Because of this, I I have become a leper and am suffering terribly after coming to earth, so please tell me some solution that can liberate me.”
Markandeya Rishi said – “O Hemmali! You have spoken the truth in front of me, that is why I tell you a fast for your salvation. If you observe a fast on Yogini Ekadashi of the Krishna Paksha of the month of Ashadha, then all your sins will be destroyed.”
Hemmali became very happy after hearing Maharishi’s words and started fasting on Yogini Ekadashi as per his words. Due to the effect of this fast, he returned to his old form and started living happily with his wife.
O king! The result of the story of this Yogini Ekadashi is like feeding eighty-eight thousand Brahmins. By fasting for this, all the sins are destroyed and in the end, after attaining salvation, the person becomes entitled to heaven.”
