Maharishi Patanjali is known as the father of Yoga. In Hindu religious tradition, Maharishi Patanjali is considered to be the incarnation of Sahastrasarpa Adisesha of Lord Vishnu. It is said by scholars that Maharishi Patanjali lived between the second century BC to the fourth century AD. He composed the sutras of yoga. He composed a total of 195 to 196 yoga sutras. Through his sutras, Maharishi Patanjali systematized the philosophy and practices of yoga.

Origin of Yoga is more than 4000 years old

Maharishi Patanjali divided Yoga into eight limbs or forms called Ashtanga Yoga. He divided Ashtanga Yoga into eight parts: Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi. All these open the way for physical, mental and spiritual development. Along with composing Yoga Sutras, Patanjali also wrote Mahabhashya on Sanskrit grammar and a treatise on Ayurveda. Where did Maharishi Patanjali learn yoga?

In Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva is considered to be Adiyogi (the first yogi). It is believed that God himself gave the knowledge of yoga to the Saptarishis. This knowledge was spread through the Guru-Shishya tradition for generations. Patanjali learned yoga by integrating these ancient traditions, Sankhya philosophy, Buddhist and Jain influences.
