July 15, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Even today, many misconceptions and myths are popular among people regarding plastic surgery. Some people consider it just a means to look beautiful, while some believe that after plastic surgery a person completely changes. These confusions have increased further due to social media, films and incomplete information. Experts say that plastic surgery is a serious medical procedure, which should be done only on the advice of a competent and trained surgeon. Every year 15th July is celebrated as World Plastic Surgery Day. People do not have that much specific information about plastic surgery.

According to doctors, plastic surgery is not limited to just cosmetic changes. It is also used in patients injured in accidents, skin problems caused by birth, damage caused by burns, reconstructive surgery after cancer surgery and many other health conditions.

Common myths related to plastic surgery

Myth 1- Plastic surgery is only to enhance beauty.

Truth: A major part of plastic surgery is reconstructive surgery, the purpose of which is to restore the function and normal appearance of the affected part of the body.

Myth 2- Plastic surgery is completely risk-free.

Truth: Like any surgery, there may be a risk of infection, bleeding, anesthesia-related problems, or other complications. Therefore, it is very important to choose an experienced surgeon and a recognized hospital.

Myth 3- Once the surgery is done, one gets a perfect look forever.

Truth: The effects of aging, lifestyle and natural changes in the body persist over time. The results of some procedures last a long time, but are not always permanent.

Myth 4- A face like the one seen on social media can be easily created.

Truth: Filters and photo editing present a picture different from reality. The physical structure of every person is different, so the results may also vary.

Myth 5- It is safe to get surgery done anywhere at low cost.

Truth: Making decisions based only on cheap price can be dangerous. The doctor’s qualification, experience and hospital facilities should be given priority.

What did the doctor say?

Dr. Shobhit Sharma (Principal Consultant, Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, Yashoda Medicity) says that nowadays due to social media and internet, people read and see a lot about plastic surgery, but not every information is correct. Many patients come with filtered photos and want the same face, even though every person’s body structure is different.

Our aim is not to change someone completely, but to enhance their natural beauty and self-confidence in a safe manner. The patient should be given complete information about the possible benefits, limitations, risks and recovery before surgery.

He further says, “The decision of plastic surgery should not be taken hastily or under anyone’s pressure. If a person’s expectations are unrealistic or he is taking the decision only under the influence of social media, then proper counseling is necessary first.”

Keep these things in mind before surgery

Consult only a qualified and board-trained plastic surgeon.

Check the accreditation of the hospital or surgical center.

Ask the doctor in detail about the benefits, risks and recovery of the procedure.

Do not hide information about your medical history, allergies and ongoing medications.

Give priority to your needs and health instead of copying social media trends or celebrity looks.

Experts say that plastic surgery is considered successful only when the patient’s expectations are realistic and the procedure is done scientifically. Right information, selection of a qualified specialist and patient decisions not only give better results but also avoid unnecessary risks.
