World-changing Quantum Computer may arrive by 2029, Microsoft introduces Majorana 2 chip

June 3, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Microsoft Majorana 2: Microsoft has introduced a new quantum computing chip named Majorana 2 in its Build 2026 conference. The company claims that it is 1000 times more reliable than its previous generation technology. Microsoft believes that with the help of this technology, a commercially useful quantum computer can be created by the year 2029. According to the company, this achievement can bring major changes in areas like healthcare, energy, food production and scientific research. Let us know about the features of this chip…

What is Quantum Computer and why is it special?

Quantum computers work completely differently from traditional computers. While normal computers solve a problem one by one, quantum computers can analyze countless possibilities simultaneously. For this reason, they are considered the technology of the future to solve very complex problems rapidly. According to Microsoft, such machines can play an important role in the future in scientific research, discovery of new medicines, energy management and solving environmental challenges. The company believes that quantum computing has the potential to solve the world’s most difficult technical and scientific questions.

Why is Majorana 2 chip special?

Microsoft said that Majorana 2 is 1000 times more reliable than its previous quantum technology. The biggest challenge of quantum computing is to keep qubits stable for a long time. According to the company, the average lifetime of a qubit in Majorana 2 has reached 20 seconds, while in some cases it can last up to a minute. Microsoft has used lead based superconductor in this chip instead of the old aluminum based design. The company claims that this provides better protection to the qubits from external influences and has significantly improved the reliability of the system.

The speed of Quantum Computing increased with the help of AI

Microsoft’s AI-based research system Microsoft Discovery has also played an important role in the development of Majorana 2. This platform helps scientists in research work with the help of autonomous AI agents. According to the company, AI is helping in finding hidden patterns by analyzing quantum data of the last two decades. Due to this, even such experiments are being completed faster which earlier would have taken several weeks. Microsoft says that due to better reliability, faster operation and smaller qubit size, the company is now closer to a scalable quantum computer that will be able to solve real-world problems.
