Women’s T20 World Cup: India’s Shree Charani became the best bowler, took the most wickets in just 5 matches.

July 5, 2026 by Uma Shankar

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 has come to an end and it was the same ending that we have become accustomed to for more than a decade. Once again Australia showed its dominance and took back the T20 World Cup trophy. While Australia became the champion, England remained the runner-up. But Team India’s hands remained empty in this T20 World Cup also. Despite this failure, Indian bowler Shri Charani definitely left his mark, taking the maximum of 14 wickets in the tournament.

on sunday 5th june Australia and England The Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 reached its conclusion with the final match at Lord’s between. Australia won this match by 7 wickets and got its name written on the T20 World Cup trophy for the 7th time. In this match, a total of only 7 wickets fell from both the teams and no bowler from both the teams was able to take more than one wicket in the match and hence no one was able to surpass Shri Charani.

Charani made a record in the first World Cup itself

Indian team’s 21-year-old spinner Shri Charani played only 5 matches and in these 5 innings she took maximum 14 wickets. Left-arm spinner Charani took these wickets at an excellent average of 8.35 and a tremendous strike rate of 8.57, while bowling very economically, he spent only 117 runs in 20 overs in the entire tournament at an economy rate of 5.85.

If the Indian team had reached the final or even the semi-finals, Charani might have broken the record of most wickets in a Women’s T20 World Cup. This record was made by New Zealand spinner Emily Karr by taking 15 wickets in the 2024 event. But the success of the Indian spinner is special because this was his first T20 World Cup. In this way, the record of most wickets in the debut T20 World Cup became in the name of Shri Charani.

How far behind were the other bowlers?

Australia’s world champion captain Sophie Molineau and Pakistan’s captain Fatima Sana are at second place. Both took 11-11 wickets. The special thing is that both of them have also become the captains taking the most wickets in a World Cup. Molineau equaled Fatima by taking one wicket in the final. England’s Sophie Eccleston and West Indies captain Hayley Mathews jointly stood at the third position with 10 wickets each.
