The era of conflict in West Asia is not ending. Even amid the ongoing talks between America and Iran, there is a situation of tension in the region. Amidst the tension, the US Central Command has demanded the deployment of its most modern hypersonic missile ‘Dark Eagle’ against Iran. If this proposal is approved, it will be the US Army’s first operational hypersonic missile deployment.
Iran has deployed many of its mobile ballistic missile launchers in the interior and protected areas of the country, where existing American missiles cannot easily reach. In such a situation, the Dark Eagle missile, which has a range of about 2,800 kilometers, is being seen as a major strategic option.
Following the ongoing fragile ceasefire in Lebanon and recent security developments, America has increased its military preparedness in the region. If the conflict flares up again, the Dark Eagle could be used against missile bases and command centers deep inside Iran.
What is Dark Eagle?
Dark Eagle is the Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW) of the US Army. It is a ground-launched boost-glide hypersonic missile, which can fly at five times the speed of sound or more (Mach 5+). In some reports, its maximum speed is stated to be from Mach 17 to Mach 20.
Its biggest feature is that it can change its direction while moving towards the target, which makes it very difficult for the enemy air defense system to stop it. Its estimated range is considered to be around 2800 to 3,500 kilometers. It is launched through Mobile Transporter Erector Launcher (TEL).
Dark Eagle can attack deep bunkers and highly protected military bases with precision. It is different from conventional ballistic missiles. Dark Eagle can change its direction and path in the air while moving towards the target. The biggest thing is that it is almost impossible for the air defense system to track and stop it.
sparks may flare up
This missile is considered to be state-of-the-art, but according to the testing agencies of the US Defense Department, its war trial is yet to be conducted. However, given the limited stock of its conventional long-range weapons, the US wants to make hypersonic capability rapidly operational.
If Washington greenlights the deployment of Dark Eagle, it could ignite a firestorm in the Gulf region. Iran and its allies may consider this a major military provocation. Whereas, Russia and China are also keeping a close watch on this entire incident. This step can affect the balance of power in the Middle East and its impact can also be seen on global oil markets.
