Discussions have intensified regarding the resignation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. British newspaper The Observer has claimed in its report that Starmer can announce the date of resignation or leaving office on Monday. However, a government source has said that Starmer is still doing his job as Prime Minister and his entire focus is on running the country. More than 100 Labor Party MPs have publicly said that Starmer should step down or decide the time of his departure.
Starmer’s condition was becoming weak for the last several months, but on Friday his difficulties increased further. His rival Andy Burnham won a seat in Parliament. After this victory, he is now in a position to formally challenge the leadership of the Labor Party. According to the report, Starmer is discussing his future with his wife at his official residence Chequers.
What did Starmer say?
Many senior leaders of the Labor Party are hopeful that he can make a big statement regarding his political future on Monday. However, on Friday, Starmer had clearly said that he would face any challenge against the leadership. He appealed to the party leaders not to indulge in infighting and harm the party.
Keir Starmer led the Labor Party to a major victory in the 2024 general election. But after that, due to many controversies, scams and frequent changes in policies, his popularity has declined rapidly. Many people believe that he could not fulfill his promises of improving the living standards of the people and strengthening the economy.
Andy Burnham is the strongest contender
56-year-old Andy Burnham is being considered the strongest successor to Starmer. He recently promised to give a new direction to the country after winning the elections. His supporters want Starmer to step down voluntarily. Former Health Minister Wes Streeting has also indicated that he may run for the leadership if necessary. Some reports have claimed that if Burnham becomes Prime Minister, he may remove Finance Minister Rachel Reeves, although this has not been officially confirmed.
