Will Iran-America quench the thirst for war? Know why Gulf countries are in tension

July 18, 2026 by Uma Shankar

The ongoing military tension between America and Iran is continuously increasing. Iranian positions were attacked by the US Army for the 7th consecutive day. The US also targeted a desalination plant located in the city of Jask in southern Iran, which makes sea water potable. Due to this, water supply to 10 thousand people of 20 villages here came to a standstill.

An Iranian desalination plant destroyed in American attack

According to Iran’s state news agency Tasnim, the plant’s seawater pumping station and power transformer were completely destroyed in the attack. This has created a drinking water crisis in the area. Iran says that targeting even civilian infrastructure is a war crime under international humanitarian law.

Two desalination plants badly damaged in Iran’s retaliation

Iran also carried out drone and missile attacks on America’s allies in the Gulf countries in retaliation. Two desalination plants of Kuwait were badly damaged in these attacks. Apart from this, the power system has also suffered huge damage. Many firefighters were injured in the fire incidents. Air raid sirens continued to sound in Bahrain too, people were advised to move to safe places. At the same time, Jordan says that it shot down 10 ballistic missiles coming from Iran in the air.

What is IRGC’s claim?

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claims that it targeted the US military’s fuel center at Al-Ahmadi port in Kuwait. Attacked the assembly area of American fighter planes at Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain. The American military base in Azraq, Jordan was also attacked. Iran also said that it has also destroyed two American fighter planes. Although America has not confirmed this.

Iran accuses America of attacking its infrastructure

The US Central Command says that it is targeting Iran’s military bases, weapons warehouses, logistics network and maritime capabilities. But, Iran alleges that the American attacks are targeting not only military bases but also civilian infrastructure like water, bridges and railways. Iranian state media have also released photos of damaged bridges and railway lines in southern areas. However, Kuwait’s water and electricity infrastructure has also been damaged in Iran’s retaliation.

Drinking water crisis may occur in Gulf countries

A ceasefire agreement was signed between Iran and America with the end of the war in June. But on July 7, during the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, US President Donald Trump had announced that the interim agreement with Iran has now ended. Since then, both America and Iran are continuously attacking each other. At present, there are no signs of tension easing. If both countries continue attacking each other, a global oil crisis may occur again. Apart from this, the way desalination plants are being attacked, there may be a situation of drinking water crisis in Gulf countries, due to which their concerns have increased.
