Apple iPhone Theft Detection: The company is working on a new feature to further strengthen the security of iPhone users. Recently a new report has come out in which it has been said that like Android, Apple is also working on theft detection lock feature for users. This feature, through the AI and accelerometer sensor present in the phone, will detect that someone has snatched the phone from the hand.
Apple is developing this feature
According to the report of 9to5Mac, the company is preparing a new security feature which will automatically lock the iPhone if it is detected to be snatched from the user’s hand. It is not clear when this feature will be rolled out for iPhone users? This upcoming feature reportedly works based on multiple signals, such as the iPhone’s accelerometer, to identify fraud.
Apple’s Anti Snatching feature works similarly to Google’s theft detection lock feature on Android. To verify incidents of theft or snatching, this feature will monitor the distance between the iPhone and the paired Apple Watch. If the phone moves away from the connected smartwatch, the system may consider this as another indicator of theft.
How will this feature work?
This upcoming security feature of Apple will reportedly follow the rules of the existing Stolen Device Protection System. With this update, iPhone will analyze whether the handset is connected to a known WiFi network or at a known location such as the user’s home or work. If the iPhone is detected in an unknown location and network, this feature will automatically lock the phone and prevent access to protected accounts and personal information under the Stolen Device Protection tool.
It is worth noting that to use Stolen Device Protection, users will have to turn on two-factor authentication for their Apple account. Users can set a passcode, Face ID or Touch ID, and required location to avail this service. Additionally, the Find My feature must be on and cannot be turned off if Stolen Device Protection is on.
How does Google Theft Detection work?
Google’s Theft Detection Lock relies on on-device AI to understand motion and context that indicate snatch-and-run theft. When an attempted theft is detected, this tool instantly locks the device screen.
