The debate around Artificial Intelligence (AI) has intensified across the world. Now Google CEO Sundar Pichai has also admitted that the concern of students and youth about jobs is not wrong. In a podcast interview, Pichai said that AI is bringing rapid change and people are naturally worried about its impact. However, he also said that the new generation is capable of facing every challenge and can make the future better. He also said that these youth will play a big role in the coming times in both taking this technology forward and dealing with its effects. His statement is much discussed amid the growing fear about AI.
Why is fear increasing about AI?
Sundar Pichai recently appeared on the Hard Fork Podcast, where he was asked what he would do if students protested about AI during his speech at Stanford University. There were some recent controversies behind this question, where Eric Schmidt and Big Machine Records CEO Scott Borchetta faced opposition after making statements on AI. Pichai reacted calmly to this and said that he has faith in the new generation. He admitted that fear about AI is increasing among people, especially among the youth who are looking for jobs. He said that humans are not ready to easily understand the changes happening so rapidly and this is why anxiety increases.
What did Pichai say about job and future?
According to the report of Business Insider, Google CEO said that the impact of AI technology is clearly visible on the job market. In the last few months, many big companies have cited AI as the reason behind employee layoffs and changes. In recent months, unemployment among new graduates had reached its highest level in four years. Pichai acknowledged that people are rightly worried because AI will change the way work is done in the future. However, he also said that in the coming times, these same youth will play a big role in both taking this technology forward and dealing with its effects. According to him, change can be difficult, but the new generation adapts itself to every challenge.
Tech industry lagged behind in explaining the benefits of AI
Sundar Pichai also admitted that the tech industry has not yet been successful in explaining the benefits of AI to people properly. He said that companies will have to work harder to show how technology can improve people’s lives. Pichai believes that every major technology in history brought fear in the beginning, but later it improved the standard of living and innovation. However, at present there seems to be less trust in AI among the common people. A New York Times poll was also mentioned in the interview, in which only 16 percent of people described AI as mostly good, while a large number of people saw it from a negative perspective. This is the reason why the pressure on tech companies to increase transparency regarding AI is continuously increasing.
