A by-election is taking place in Britain, on which the eyes of the entire country’s politics are fixed. About 76 thousand voters of Makerfield seat, which is about 0.1% of the country’s population, can influence the political future of Keir Starmer. Popular Labor Party leader Andy Burnham is contesting from here, who is also being considered as a possible future Prime Minister. If Andy Burnham wins this seat, it is believed that he can challenge Keir Starmer for the leadership of the Labor Party. This is the reason why this seemingly ordinary by-election has now become the biggest contest in British politics.
Why is Andy Burnham’s return so important?
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is counted among Britain’s most popular leaders. However, he is not currently a Member of Parliament, hence cannot participate in the race for the leadership of the Labor Party. After the Makerfield seat became vacant, he has been made a candidate from here. Political analysts believe that if Burnham reaches Parliament, he can openly challenge the leadership of Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
After the weak performance of the Labor Party in the local elections and the resignation of several ministers from the government, the discussion about change of leadership within the party has intensified. In such a situation, Burnham’s victory is not just the victory of one seat but can work to change the balance of power within the Labor Party.
Increasing pressure on Labor Party
The popularity of Keir Starmer, who came to power with a huge majority about two years ago, is said to be continuously declining. Critics say that he was not able to clearly implement the changes he had promised. The party’s position has weakened due to U-turns on many policies and limited government spending.
Meanwhile, Nigel Farage’s party Reform UK has grown rapidly. Reform UK also seems to be gaining in national opinion polls. In Makerfield too, Reform candidate Robert Kenyon remains a big challenge for Labour. Reform UK’s victory in 24 out of 25 seats in the Wigan area in the local elections has further increased the concerns of the Labor Party.
Why is this election of Makerfield special?
Makerfield is considered a traditional Labor stronghold in northern England. This area has been dependent on coal mines, steel industry and manufacturing for decades, with a large working class population supporting the Labor Party. But the economy here has changed in the last few decades and now the main areas of employment are construction, retail business, education and health services.
It is a “classic post-industrial” region, according to political experts, with a high elderly population, high home ownership and strong support for Brexit. Many voters here appear disappointed with traditional politics. Some believe that the Labor Party has moved away from its roots, while some voters are attracted to the anti-immigration politics of Reform UK. This is the reason why this election is no longer just an election for one seat but has become an indicator of the changing politics of Britain.
