Humidity levels increase during the monsoon season, due to the moisture present in the air it becomes difficult for the washing machine to dry on its own. The washing machine comes in contact with water during every wash, so due to the increased humidity, the moisture left in the drum, gasket and detergent tray remains for a long time. Over time, moisture can cause mold and bacteria to grow inside the machine, causing odors that can leach into clothes and damage the machine’s internal parts in the long run.

In normal weather, the water left inside the drum dries up quite quickly as the surrounding air helps absorb it. During monsoon, the humidity in the surrounding air remains high for several days, so Machine Moisture remains inside it and it is not able to dry completely. The rubber door seal on front-load machines is particularly sensitive, as water remains in its folds even after the wash cycle has finished, making them one of the first places for mold to grow. Once mold grows, it not only affects the machine but also gets stuck on the clothes the next time you wash them, causing the clothes to smell even after being cleaned.
According to Moneycontrol, the best habit for washing machine users during monsoon is to leave the machine door and detergent tray open for a few hours instead of closing the machine immediately after washing clothes. This allows the air trapped inside to come out and the moisture from the drum and gasket dries up. Wiping the rubber seal with a dry cloth before closing the door further improves safety. Those using top-load machines should also adopt the same method and keep the lid open between washing clothes.
