The friendship between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (Bibi) was once considered very strong. After Trump returned to power, Netanyahu has visited the White House six times, but this time the picture seems to be changing. Despite efforts for more than two weeks, he did not get time to meet Trump. The White House did not even confirm the meeting. The question is arising that what has changed that Trump is no longer in a hurry to meet Netanyahu, who is counted among his closest allies? The reason for this is not just protocol, but strategic differences and increasing political resentment.
According to American media reports, Netanyahu had been trying to meet Trump at the White House for the last two weeks. From Israel’s side, preparations for his visit to America had also started. The government plane was ready and the advance security team was also sent to Washington. But the White House never officially confirmed this meeting. Ultimately the trip was cancelled.
- Both have different strategies regarding Iran. The biggest difference of opinion between the two leaders is said to be regarding Iran. The Trump administration now wants to limit tensions with Iran, while Netanyahu’s government is believed to be in favor of adopting a more aggressive stance. The US administration does not want the regional war to drag on any longer.
- Controversy over military presence in Lebanon and Syria- According to reports, America wants Israel to reduce its military action and presence in Lebanon and Syria. The Trump administration believes that this can reduce tension in West Asia, but Netanyahu does not seem to agree on this.
- Public criticism on selling F-35 to Turkey- In an interview given to Fox News, Netanyahu had raised questions on Trump’s plan to sell F-35 fighter aircraft to Turkey. According to White House officials, Trump became angry with this statement. He believed that no allied leader should make public comments on American defense policy.
- Confidence regarding Iran war weakened- There is a perception within the White House that Netanyahu made many such claims regarding the Iran war which were later proved not to be true. Due to this, the trust in Trump’s team was not the same as before.
- Netanyahu’s popularity declined in America- Netanyahu is no longer as popular as before, not only among the Democratic Party but also among Trump’s close MAGA supporters. The atmosphere against him in American politics seems to be harsher than before.
- Big message from Democrats- Recently, 103 Democrat MPs in the US House of Representatives voted in favor of cutting $3 billion in aid to Israel. This is being considered a sign of growing dissatisfaction towards the Netanyahu government.
- Clear message from White House- White House officials indicated that Netanyahu was hoping to meet, but never got the green signal from Trump. It is clear from this that America currently seems to be in no mood to carry forward relations in the old style.
However, the White House has not completely ruled out the possibility of a future meeting. If Netanyahu goes to America, he may meet Trump during some other program. But current developments show that relations between Washington and Tel Aviv are no longer as smooth as before. Netanyahu not getting time is not just a matter of diplomatic schedule. This is also an indication that the Trump administration now wants to take decisions in West Asia according to its priorities. If the differences between the two leaders continue like this, it may affect the direction of America-Israel relations in the future.
