Why is the wine bottle only 750 ml, why does the whole world follow the same size?

July 12, 2026 by Uma Shankar

If you have ever seen a wine bottle, you must have noticed one thing. Most wine bottles are of 750 ml and their color is dark green or brown. But have you ever wondered why this happens? There are many interesting reasons behind this, not just tradition, but related to history, science and business.

There may be many reasons behind the bottle of only 750 ml, but a popular belief is related to the wine trade between France and Britain in ancient times. In ancient times, large quantities of wine was sent to Britain from France. At that time France used to measure in litres, while a different measurement system was used in Britain. In such a situation, the 750 ml bottle made accounting and trade easier for both the countries. For this reason this size gradually became standard throughout the world.

6 glasses theory

Another belief is that in ancient times when there were no machines, glass bottles were made by hand. At that time, the amount of air that glass makers could blow at one time was enough to produce a bottle of approximately 750 ml. Gradually this size started being used the most. The second reason is that a 750 ml bottle produces approximately 6 glasses of wine. This quantity was considered sufficient to share during a meal with family or friends.

preserve for a period of time

Experts believe that a 750 ml bottle is better for preserving wine for a longer period and maintaining its quality. A wine bottle is usually closed with a cork. A little air remains inside the bottle, which can spoil the taste of the wine over time. There is a perfect balance of wine and air in the 750 ml bottle, due to which the wine prepares slowly and better.

Easy to carry and store

The 750 ml bottle is neither too small nor too big. Therefore it is easy to pack, store and transport from one place to another. This is the reason why wine companies around the world adopted this shape and today it has become the most common bottle.

Is it only a 750 ml bottle?

No. Wine is also available in bottles of many different sizes. A 375 ml bottle is called a half bottle. A 1.5 liter bottle is called a magnum, which is equal to two normal bottles.

Why is a wine bottle green or dark in color?

The reason for this is also quite interesting. When glass bottles started being used in the 18th century, the technology of making glass was not so modern. The iron present in the raw material could not be completely removed. For this reason the color of the bottles automatically became green or dark. Later scientists found that sunlight and bright light harm the quality of wine. Too much light can spoil the wine quickly and its taste can also change.

For this reason, even today most wines are sold in dark green or brown bottles. According to experts, dark colored bottles allow only 8% to 37% light to pass through, whereas transparent bottles allow more than 90% light to pass through. Therefore dark glass helps in preserving the wine for a long time.
