For the first time after the ceasefire, America has taken military action around Iran’s strategic Chabahar Port. This attack has not only increased tensions in West Asia, but has also raised concerns over one of India’s most important foreign strategic projects.
Chabahar Port is not just a port for India, but is a strategic gateway to Central Asia and Afghanistan. India has made huge investments in the development and operation of this port.
If conflict increases in this region, India’s trade, connectivity and strategic interests may be affected. After the American attack, information about several explosions and power outages has come to light in Chabahar. The US military says it targeted maritime infrastructure and military bases that Iran was allegedly using against international vessels. At the same time, Iran has warned of a strong reaction, calling it a violation of the ceasefire.
Why is Chabahar so important for India?
- Way to bypass Pakistan: India does not have direct land access to Afghanistan through Pakistan. In such a situation, Chabahar Port gives India the option to bypass Pakistan and deliver goods to Afghanistan and Central Asia.
- Chabahar Port, an important part of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), is an important hub of the INSTC Corridor connecting India, Iran, Russia and Central Asian countries. With this, trade between India and Europe can become faster and cheaper.
- China’s strategic answer to Gwadar Port is China’s big investment in Pakistan’s Gwadar Port. The distance between Gwadar and Chabahar is approximately 170 kilometers. Therefore, Chabahar is seen as a balance to India’s strategic presence and the China-Pakistan alliance.
- India’s presence in the Indian Ocean Chabahar is very close to the important sea routes of the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. India’s presence here is considered important in terms of regional maritime security and business interests.
India has recently made a big agreement
India and Iran have signed an agreement in recent years regarding the operation of Chabahar Port. Under this, Indian company India Ports Global Limited (IPGL) is operating a terminal of this port. India aims to develop Chabahar as a major regional trade and logistics hub.
India’s concerns may increase
If military tensions increase in and around Chabahar, it could impact India’s trade routes, energy security and connectivity plans to Central Asia. Besides, the risks on Indian investments and ongoing projects at the port may also increase.
Amidst the increasing tension in West Asia, India will now keep an eye on how safe Chabahar Port and the Indian projects running there are and in what direction the situation in the region moves forward.
