Why is BCCI thinking of holding IPL in September-October? Consideration of organizing tournament twice a year

May 27, 2026 by Uma Shankar

The 19th season of IPL is about to end and soon it will be decided who will become the champion this time. But while the tournament organizer BCCI is looking forward to the successful completion of another season of the league, it is also eyeing the coming season, in which the consideration of major changes has already started. One such idea is regarding the window of organizing IPL, which is being discussed to be shifted to September-October. IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal revealed this in an interview and said that this is being considered due to the rising temperatures in May.

The IPL 2026 season started on March 28 and this journey of 74 matches will end with the final on May 31. But meanwhile, the weather conditions have especially troubled North and West India. The increasing heat every year in the month of May has become a cause of concern, some of which has also affected the presence of spectators in the stadium. Besides, a concern has also been expressed regarding the fitness of the players. In view of this, there is discussion within the board about changing the tournament window.

In an interview given to Sportstar website, Dhumal said these things in response to a question regarding the lack of audience interest in IPL. He said, “We need to sit and talk with the broadcasters whether the tournament can be shifted to some other window or not. One suggestion is the September-October window which is best because it is right around Diwali and is a good time for advertisers. During the next bilateral tender, we will see whether this window is available or not.”

From the first season of IPL till now (except 2 seasons of Covid), IPL has always been held between March to May. In such a situation, it is not easy to make changes in it. But not only changing the window, BCCI is also thinking of organizing the tournament in two parts. Dhumal said that in view of the increasing heat in May, the board is exploring the possibility of organizing the tournament from February to April and then at the end of the year (September-October), but for this it will also discuss with the cricket boards of other countries, so that players are available.
