Warships are special ships that protect the country at sea. Their job is to search for enemy submarines and ships, fire missiles, and protect coastal areas. That means their role is very important during war. If these warships catch fire, imagine how much damage will be done to the military power of that country. Recently, incidents of fire have been recorded in many American warships.
‘Naval and Merchant Ships’, a Chinese military magazine, also claimed that in recent months, cases of fire, electrical failure and propulsion system problems have been reported on America’s most modern warships. These include USS Gerald R. Warships include the Ford aircraft carrier, USS Zumwalt destroyer, Nimitz-class carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Higgins.
Recently, 64 sailors were reported to have fallen ill after being exposed to diesel fumes due to a generator malfunction on the Ohio-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine USS Nebraska. In March, a fire broke out in the laundry room of the USS Ford. Also in April, fires broke out on the USS Eisenhower during maintenance and during upgrades at the USS Zumwalt shipyard.

What are the reasons for the fire on US advanced warships?
The causes of fire on American warships were short circuit, overloaded electrical system, leakage of fuel or oil in the engine room, human errors during maintenance. Constant pressure of operation, delay in maintenance and upkeep have also been the cause of fire. At the same time, in the report of ‘Naval and Merchant Ships’ it has also been claimed that the lack of skilled craftsmen in the shipyard has also been a main reason for the fire on warships.
Increasing pressure of continuous operation
- US Navy warships are deployed in almost every strategic maritime area of the world.
- Being continuously at sea for a long time puts more pressure on the engine, electrical and other systems.
- The report claims that the operational tempo is putting additional burden on the system.
- In such situations, many times fire occurs due to lack of timely maintenance.
maintenance delay
- Many warships do not reach the shipyard on time due to various reasons.
- Due to delay in repair and servicing, even small defects turn into big ones.
- The US Navy has also been troubled by shipyard capacity and maintenance backlog for a long time.
- In such a situation, delay in maintenance invites situations like fire on warships.
electrical fault condition
- Electrical faults are also becoming the main reason for fires on warships.
- Almost every capability of modern warships depends on electricity.
- In case of electrical failure, many systems can be affected simultaneously and a fire situation can occur.
Shipyard and supply chain problems
- Modern warships demand expertise for spare parts and repairs.
- If repair facilities are limited or spare parts are not supplied in time, warships are affected.
- Apart from this, expert craftsmen would be required for such ships.
- A mistake by an inexperienced craftsman could prove detrimental to the warship.
Very high-tech system
- Today’s American warships are much more digital and automated.
- These are equipped with high-voltage electrical grid, advanced sensors, radar and computer networks.
- The greater the electronic complexity, the greater is the possibility of technical failure.
- This increases the risk of incidents like fire.
What challenges is the US Navy facing?
It has also been said in the report of ‘Naval and Merchant Ships’ that the US Navy is facing massive structural challenges in the maintenance of warships. These include delays in servicing schedules, inadequate shipyard capacity and shortage of skilled workers. If the industrial system is not able to handle the heavy maintenance burden of these advanced warships in time, then problems like fire, manufacturing defects and electrical failures will continue to occur. In such a situation, America may have to suffer huge losses. There may be a shortage of warships in operational availability.
The report also states that excessive reliance on advanced electrical and automated systems is a threat to warships. In this regard, the blackout on USS Higgins has also been pointed out. It has also been said that technology can improve performance, but any small electrical fault or lapse in maintenance can create a huge problem for the entire warship. At present, the biggest challenge for the US Navy is no longer to build more advanced warships, but to maintain them properly, otherwise incidents of fire will keep on happening in the future.
