
Indian Army Deputy Chief Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai has been appointed as the new Military Advisor in the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS). This is the first time that a serving military officer has been appointed to this post. NSCS is headed by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai held the post of Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) during Operation Sindoor.
According to sources, now he will soon assume his new responsibility. His tenure is till December 2027. His appointment has been approved this week. Rajiv Ghai’s military experience has been quite extensive. He has commanded the infantry battalion in the western sector. Apart from this, he has also commanded the Independent Brigade in the Central Region, Infantry Division in Arunachal Pradesh and 15 Corps based in Srinagar.

Before him General N.S. Raja Subramani was on this post, who is now the new Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) of the country. Before this, Air Marshal Sandeep Singh and General Anil Chauhan had also been military advisors. This post was reactivated in 2018 in the Modi government. Lieutenant General Vinod Khandare became the first military advisor in the government.
This appointment is considered very important
Whereas Lieutenant General Prakash Menon handled this responsibility from 2012 to 2014. Later he also served as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in NSCS. This appointment is considered important to strengthen better military coordination and strategic advice in matters related to national security.
Important responsibilities of Ghai’s career
Lieutenant General Ghai has held many big and important responsibilities in his career. He is considered an expert in counter-terrorism operations in the Kashmir Valley and near the LOC. He has been widely appreciated for his role, strategic decisions and plans against terrorists during Operation Sindoor.
