Saturday 6th June was a very busy day for Indian cricket. The day started with the India-Afghanistan test match in Mullanpur. Then in the afternoon, BCCI announced the squad for the upcoming T20 series and Asian Games, in which Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy and Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s entry into Team India were the most talked about. But amid all this, the board also announced changes in the ODI series against Afghanistan, where young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been given a chance in place of injured Virat Kohli.
Jaiswal’s entry into the team again
First day of test match between India and Afghanistan Yashasvi Jaiswal Could not stay at the crease for long and returned after getting out within the first hour of the match. But he soon got the good news to remove this disappointment, when the team was announced at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai and during this, Board Secretary Devjit Saikia told that Jaiswal will be a part of the Indian squad in the ODI series against Afghanistan.
Jaiswal did not get a place in the first selected squad, on which questions were raised then. But then in the final of IPL 2026, Virat Kohli suddenly got injured while batting. There was a strain in his hamstring, after which questions were being raised on his playing. Then reports came that Virat would not be able to play in the ODI series. Eventually BCCI also confirmed this and said that Virat will not participate in the 3-match series starting from June 13. Jaiswal played the last ODI match against South Africa in December 2025, in which he scored a century.
Will Kohli be able to play in the England series?
But will Virat Kohli not be able to play in the ODI series to be held on England tour? This 3-match ODI series will be played after the 5-match T20 series to be held in July. When Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar was asked about this in the BCCI press conference, he expressed hope that he would be fit for the England series. Agarkar said, “It’s only been a week since he got injured in the IPL final. I don’t know the timeline (of his fitness) but it looks like he will probably be fit for the England ODI series.”
