
In a major reshuffle in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the Central Government on Tuesday night appointed Lokhande Prashant Sitaram as the new Chairman. Also, Varun Bhardwaj has been appointed as the new Secretary of CBSE. These two officers were given this responsibility at a time when the system of CBSE is under question. In such a situation, both the officers face a big challenge to improve this system.
Now this question is also arising in the minds of people that why did the government entrust this responsibility to these two officers. Actually, the new chairman of CBSE, Lokhande Prashant is a senior IAS officer of Sitaram. He is counted among the top administrative officers of the country. Lokhande Prashant Sitaram is an officer of AGMUT cadre 2001 batch. He is currently working as Additional Secretary in the Home Ministry. He has long experience in the field of education administration and policy making.
Who is Lokhande Prashant Sitaram?
Lokhande Prashant Sitaram has done BE in Mechanical Engineering from Pune University and Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering from NITIE, Mumbai. Presently, he is working as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi. He has held this post from April 1, 2026. His previous assignments include the roles of Joint Secretary, Director, Deputy Secretary, Private Secretary, Counselor, Deputy Commissioner and Secretary. He has been awarded the ‘State Award (Gold)’ twice for ‘meritorious service’. He is proficient in English, Hindi and Marathi languages. Now he will take charge as the new Chairman of CBSE.
Who is Varun Bhardwaj?
Varun Bhardwaj (IIS officer, 2008 batch) has been appointed as the new Secretary of CBSE. He is currently working as Director in the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education. Varun Bhardwaj will hold the charge of CBSE Secretary till the completion of his tenure on central deputation till September 19, 2027. Varun Bhardwaj has also previously served as the Registrar of Pune-based Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). Apart from this, he has also held an important position as Awareness Observer in the Election Commission.
