There is an interesting story hidden behind Computer Bug in the history of technology. The interesting thing is that the word bug in computer bug is not because of any virus but because of a real insect. It was September 9, 1947, when the world’s first computer bug was detected, but the thing to note is that it was not a common SOFTWARE bug. You will be surprised to know that this was a real worm due to which problems started occurring in the hardware of the computer system.
What happened, understand the whole story here
This first case of finding a bug was recorded by computer scientist Grace Hopper. When his colleagues at Harvard opened some hardware to find out the cause of errors in the computer system, they were shocked to see that a worm was stuck. To fix the problem the machine had to be de-bugged. Not only was the system fixed, but Hopper had taped the bug to his diary.
According to the National Museum of American History, in 1947, engineers working on the Mark II computer at Harvard University found an insect stuck in a part. He stuck that insect in his logbook and named it Bug. After this the words bug and debug soon became a common part of the language of computer programmers. Mark II was not small like today’s computer systems, its size was much larger and it had many mechanical relays i.e. switches and wires.
Actually, that day the computer suddenly stopped working and errors started coming again and again. The whole team was worried because what happened suddenly? When the investigation started, it was revealed that the moth was trapped. Due to this bug, short circuit occurred and there was a malfunction in the system. After this, bugs were removed from the computer, hence the process of improving the deficiencies in the computer came to be called Debugging.
