Whenever America is embroiled in any major war, dispute or diplomatic crisis in the world, the small Gulf country Qatar has often been helpful in finding a solution. The biggest name behind this is Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. In the last several years, he has played an important role in facilitating talks between America and its adversaries. Abdulrahman Al Thani is also holding the post of Prime Minister of Qatar from 7 March 2023 and Foreign Minister since 2016.
The latest case is of America-Iran war. Qatar mediated to end this conflict that lasted for about three months. On Sunday, a Qatari delegation reached Tehran, where the terms to end the war were finalized. The issue of reopening the Strait of Hormuz was also included in the talks. Qatar has long been considered a reliable medium of dialogue between Iran and Western countries.
Also mediated in Gaza ceasefire
The Gaza ceasefire is also included among Al Thani’s biggest successes. After the 15-month-long Gaza war, a ceasefire agreement and the release of hostages was signed between Israel and Hamas in Doha in January 2025. This agreement came into effect from January 19. Under this, Hamas agreed to release 33 Israeli hostages. This agreement was possible due to the joint efforts of Qatar, Egypt and America.
Release of Americans from the clutches of Taliban
Qatar also helped America a lot in Afghanistan. After the Taliban captured Kabul in August 2021, Qatar played an important role in the release of American citizens and other prisoners. This year, through the mediation of Qatar, five American citizens were released from Taliban captivity. American officials have also praised Qatar’s cooperation many times.
Made to talk about Venezuela and America
Qatar also hosted secret talks between the US and Venezuela. Through this, there was an exchange of prisoners and a way for temporary relief from some American sanctions. Apart from this, the Doha peace agreement between America and Taliban in 2020 was also the result of Qatar’s mediation. This agreement prepared the way for the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan in 2021.
Was the Deputy PM of Qatar from 2017 to 2023
Al Thani is also the head of Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) since 2014. This organization provides support to projects related to education, health, economic development and climate in more than 70 countries of the world. He studied Economics and Business Management from Qatar University in 2003. After this he worked on many government and economic posts. He has also been the Deputy Prime Minister of Qatar from 2017 to 2023 and the Head of Qatar Investment Authority from 2018 to 2023.
Qatar’s history of arbitration
Qatar has a long history of arbitration. It addressed the Yemen conflict in 2007, the Lebanon crisis in 2008, the agreement between the government of Yemen and Houthi rebels in 2009, the Sudan–Chad conflict in 2010, the Djibouti–Eritrea conflict in 2011, the agreement between Fatah and Hamas in 2012, the Libyan tribal dispute in 2015, the restoration of Somalia–Kenya relations in 2021 and Also played the role of mediator in the political dialogue of Chad in 2022.
From Gaza to Afghanistan, Venezuela and now Iran, whenever America got stuck in a difficult diplomatic situation, Qatar and Sheikh Al Thani played an important role in finding a way for dialogue and agreement. This is the reason why today Qatar is counted among the most influential mediating countries in the world.
