By-elections have been announced in other states of the country, but the Election Commission is still silent regarding UP. There is still no information about the dates of by-elections on seats that have been vacant in UP for 7 months. Here by-elections are awaited on the vacant seats of Ghosi, Faridpur and Duddhi assembly. There is a provision of 6 months in the Representation of the People Act, but still by-elections have not been held in UP. Ghosi seat is vacant from 20 November 2025. Faridpur and Duddhi seats are also vacant.
Professor Shyam Bihari Lal, BJP MLA from Faridpur seat of Bareilly, died in the first week of January 2026. Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Vijay Singh from Duddhi seat died in the second week of January 2026. The information about vacancy of both the seats was sent to the Election Commission in January 2026 itself.
Why is there a delay?
The by-election has been delayed due to SIR (Special Intensive Revision of Voter List). This process started in late October and was extended twice. The final voter list was released by the Election Commission on April 10. Despite this, even after more than a month has passed, no formal announcement of the by-election has been made. In such a situation, there is confusion between political parties and voters.
Assembly elections in five states
Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and four other states, Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand and Manipur, scheduled to be held in the first quarter of 2027, may be held earlier as census work is going on in the country. The last two assembly elections in these five states were held between February and March. In 2022, elections were held between 10 February and 7 March, whereas in 2017 they were held between 11 February and 8 March. The second phase of Census 2027, in which people will be counted, is to begin in February 2027. If the old pattern is followed, there is a possibility of it clashing with the election schedule.
