WhatsApp Scam Alert: WhatsApp is working on a new feature to prevent online fraud and scams. According to the report, soon a feature called “Scam Alert” can be added to the app, which will identify suspicious messages and warn users in advance. This feature is being specially designed to detect possible fake messages coming from unknown numbers. The company claims that this entire system will work only on the user’s device, due to which end to end encryption will also be safe. Currently this feature is in the development stage.
Keep an eye on scam messages coming from unknown numbers
Information about scam alert feature has been revealed in the Android beta update of WhatsApp. According to the report of WABetaInfo, this feature will identify possible fake or fraudulent messages coming from unknown contacts. If scam-like activity is seen in any message, the user will be shown a warning directly inside the chat. Along with this, it will also be told that the person sending the message is not present in the user’s contact list. After this the user will have the option to block and report that number. If the user finds the message safe then he can continue the conversation.
Investigation will be done on the device itself, privacy will be protected
According to WhatsApp, the scam alert feature will work completely on the user’s device. This means that no message will be sent to WhatsApp or Meta’s servers for checking. The entire process of identifying suspicious messages will happen on the phone itself. This is the reason why there will be no impact on end-to-end encryption and users’ personal conversations will remain safe. It has been told in the report that this system will work in the same way as the recently launched voice transcript feature works. Voice Transcript also converts audio messages into text on the device itself.
User will get complete control
According to the report, WhatsApp is also working on a transparency tool. With its help, users will be able to see when and on which messages the scam alert feature was activated. The special thing is that these logs will remain completely private and will not be shared with WhatsApp. The company is planning to keep this feature off by default. Users who want additional security will be able to turn it on in Settings. Currently, this feature is in the development stage and it is expected that it will be released to beta testers first, after which it can be extended to all users in a future update.
