Meta has been asked by the government to put the rollout of this new username feature on hold. After the feature was put on hold, now the company has replied that the names of celebrities, government institutions, celebrities and verified meta accounts will be kept reserved. In the report of Moneycontrol, a spokesperson of the company said that the facility of using username has not been started on the platform yet, that is, this feature is not live yet and this feature will be launched gradually at the end of this year.
Notice received from government, company responded
This response from the company came when the Government of India WhatsApp Sent a notice to (Meta) on the plan to launch the username feature of the messaging app. The government says that this may increase cases like online fraud, phishing, digital arrest scams. In a notice sent to the Chief Compliance Officer of WhatsApp LEC (Meta), India Operations, the government has asked Meta to provide detailed information about this feature within three days of receiving the notice. The government also directed Meta not to roll out the username feature until negotiations on the matter are completed to the satisfaction of the government.
After receiving the notice, a company spokesperson said in response, “We have announced the option for people to reserve a username of their choice on WhatsApp.” The ability to use usernames is not live yet and will be gradually rolled out later this year.
