
Now another country has joined the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA). On Friday (22 May) Saudi Arabia became the new member of IBCA. After which now the number of member countries of this alliance has increased to 26. Prime Minister Narendra Modi started this alliance in April 2023. The government had set up IBCA through the National Tiger Conservation Authority under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. According to the information, International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) is a global alliance launched by India for the conservation of the world’s seven major big cats (lion, tiger, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar and puma) and to save their natural habitats.

The International Big Cat Alliance was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 9 April 2023 during a function organized to commemorate 50 years of ‘Project Tiger’ in Mysore. It was formally established on March 12, 2024. Its headquarters is located in Delhi.
What is the purpose of IBCA?
The international organization is a platform that brings together countries where cat species like lion, tiger, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar and puma are found. Its main objective is to prevent poaching and wildlife trafficking, protect these endangered species through knowledge sharing, research, and capacity building. The International Big Cat Alliance was launched by India as a global initiative focused on the conservation and protection of big cats and their habitats around the world. This Alliance was launched by India with the aim of promoting coordinated global action to protect big cat species and their habitats.

There are currently 25 signatory countries and five observer countries in this alliance. The 25 member countries of IBCA include India, Angola, Armenia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Egypt, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Nicaragua, Niger, Paraguay, Russia, Rwanda, Somalia and Sri Lanka.
Saudi Arabia also joined
Now Saudi Arabia has also joined this alliance, after which the number of member countries of this alliance has now increased to 26.
It is believed that Saudi Arabia’s involvement will strengthen efforts for financial cooperation, regional conservation partnership and biodiversity management. The Alliance has expressed happiness over the joining of Saudi Arabia. Sharing a post on social media, the International Big Cat Alliance said, IBCA IBCA warmly welcomes Saudi Arabia as its newest member country! This is an important collective step towards advancing global cooperation for big cat conservation and a sustainable planet’.

First IBCA summit to be held in Delhi postponed
Meanwhile, the first International Big Cat Alliance Summit to be held in Delhi on June 1-2 has been postponed. A new date for this will be announced later. The summit was being held in conjunction with the fourth India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS IV) as many African countries are important partners in global efforts towards conservation, ecological sustainability and biodiversity conservation of big cat animals.
