PM WANI WiFi: The Department of Telecommunications has announced major changes in the PM WANI (Prime Minister Wi-Fi Access Network Interface) scheme. Users will benefit the most from this change because now they will get rid of long login pages and waiting for OTT, because the government is now going to provide the facility to connect Wi-Fi in devices like tablets and laptops by scanning QR Code.
What is PM WANI?
PM-WANI means Prime Minister Wi-Fi Access Network Interface. It was launched under the Digital India initiative to increase affordable public internet access across the country. Instead of relying solely on expensive mobile data or broadband, the aim is to create a larger ecosystem of public Wi-Fi hotspots that people can easily access in public places.
This system works through local public data offices (PDOs), app providers and Wi-Fi operators, who together provide internet connectivity.
What changed between then and now?
The biggest update is the new QR based authentication system. Earlier, connecting a laptop to a PM-WANI hotspot required a lengthy login process or repeated credential entry. Now, you will be able to scan the QR code through an authenticated smartphone app and quickly connect a secondary device like a laptop or tablet. According to the government, this will provide faster access to public WiFi. Another significant change is the introduction of short-term sachet-style internet plans which include 15 minute, 30 minute and 60 minute plans.
These plans are especially recommended for places like railway stations, malls, transit hubs and campuses, where you may only need temporary internet access. This next part is important if you’ve ever accidentally connected to a suspicious public Wi-Fi network.
DoT is now standardizing hotspot names using PM-WANI branding so that you can more easily identify genuine and trusted public networks. This may sound small, but it helps reduce confusion in crowded places, where dozens of Wi-Fi networks appear simultaneously.
When will these changes come?
The Department of Telecommunications has directed PM WANI stakeholders to implement the updated guidelines within eight weeks from the date of issue of the circular. This means that these features are expected to be implemented in the entire ecosystem around July 2026.
