June 16, 2026 by Uma Shankar

In an important meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi, a consensus was reached between the concerned states regarding the long pending ‘Kishau Multipurpose Dam Project’. In this meeting led by Home Minister Amit Shah, the states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan agreed to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement the “Kishau Multipurpose Project”.

After the signing of the MoU, the Kishau project will be sent to the Union Cabinet for approval. Under the Kishau Multipurpose Dam Project, 90% of the water-related cost will be borne by the Central Government as central assistance, while the remaining 10% cost will be shared among the six states. It was agreed to allocate the share of water earmarked for Himachal Pradesh to Delhi and Rajasthan in exchange for sharing in the cost of the power component of the project. This decision will prove to be an important milestone in achieving the goal of clean and pure Yamuna, as it will increase the flow of clean water in the river.

What is Kishau Multipurpose Dam Project?

Let us tell you that Kishau Multipurpose Dam Project is a hydropower and water conservation scheme proposed on the Tons River on the border of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. In which 660 MW electricity will be generated. Besides, many states including Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan will also get water for drinking and irrigation. This dam will ensure flow of water in Yamuna as per requirement. With this, these 6 states will get drinking and irrigation water.

Clean water will flow in large quantities in Yamuna

The central government claims that the Kishau project will play an important role in achieving the goal of ‘clean and continuously flowing Yamuna’. By releasing water from the dam in a controlled manner, more clean water will flow in Yamuna throughout the year, which will improve the health of the river. The consensus reached in the meeting chaired by Home Minister Amit Shah is being considered as a big step towards implementing this long pending project.

Many Union Ministers, Chief Ministers and officials were involved

Union Power Minister Manohar Lal, Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. attended the meeting. Patil, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Union Home Secretary, Union Jal Shakti Secretary, Secretary of the Ministry of Power, Chief Secretaries of Himachal and Uttarakhand Governments and senior officials of the Home Ministry, Prime Minister’s Office and Jal Shakti Ministry participated.
