May 26, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Sunscreen is considered the only way to protect yourself from tanning in the hot sun. It protects our body from the harmful rays of the sun. It is always advisable to apply sunscreen while leaving the house. While buying sunscreen, it is most important to check its SPF (Sun Protection Factor) number. This is a measurement that tells you how long your sunscreen can protect you from the sun’s harmful UVB rays (which cause sunburn).

But very few people know that now not only SPF but also PA+, PA++ or PA+++ is written on many sunscreens, which most of the people ignore or do not know its true meaning. Let us also tell you in this article what is meant by writing sunscreen PA+, PA++ or PA+++?

What does PA+++ mean?

Actually, while SPF works to protect the skin from UVB rays, PA rating indicates protection from UVA rays. UVA rays can reach deep into the skin and cause problems like tanning, wrinkles and premature aging. In such a situation, PA+++ written on sunscreen tells you how much better it can protect your skin from UVA rays. Therefore, skin experts now recommend choosing sunscreen keeping in mind not only the SPF but also the PA rating.
