West Bengal Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari gave an open warning to Nawada MLA Humayun Kabir in the Assembly on Monday. He accused him of giving inflammatory speeches and promoting anarchy. Also, he indicated that strict legal action will be taken against the MLA. He said that former MLA Saukat Mollah apologized on WhatsApp or phone. I said that I am not one to pardon and this MLA of Nawada will also not be spared.
Speaking in the Assembly, the Chief Minister Shubhendu AdhikariRead out parts of Humayun Kabir’s two controversial speeches and said that the state government will no longer tolerate hooliganism.
He said that the MLA of Nawada has a special agenda. The Chief Minister will be from Trinamool, he will be the Deputy Chief Minister. What he has just said is that he is saying all this to make his son win.
This may be Humayun Kabir’s last speech
Attacking Kabir’s recent statements, Shubhendu Adhikari said, think carefully on this – this could be his last speech. There was an uproar in the Assembly earlier in the day on this issue. BJP MLAs protested against Humayun Kabir and accused him of using objectionable language against the Chief Minister and inciting violence.
Nagarkata BJP MLA Puna Bhengra first drew the Speaker’s attention to the issue, while Narayangarh MLA Ramprasad Giri and several other BJP MLAs displayed posters with slogans against the Nawda MLA and protested inside the House. As the matter heated up, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shankar Ghosh told the Assembly that the Chief Minister was aware of the matter and he would issue a statement later in the session.
Referring to the first incident, Subhendu Adhikari referred to Humayun Kabir’s speech at the party meeting in Kashipur, Rejinagar on June 26. The Chief Minister claimed that Kabir had attacked BJP MLA Anamika Ghosh and the growing influence of the party in Murshidabad and had given her a direct warning.
It’s time to teach a lesson
In that speech, Humayun Kabir had reportedly said that if he fielded Muslims, BJP supporters would be beaten so badly that there would be no one left to carry the party flag.
He also reportedly threatened to bring lakhs of people on the streets regardless of the jail capacity and indicated that neither the Superintendent of Police nor the Chief Minister would make any difference if anger increased.
The Chief Minister also mentioned another incident that took place on June 8 at Duara Ghat in Shaktipur, where Humayun Kabir had allegedly made angry and abusive remarks against a local police station officer over the arrest of his nephew. According to the officer, the MLA along with 10,000 supporters had threatened to surround the police station and drag the officer out by holding his collar.
After reading both the statements, Subhendu Adhikari said, enough is enough. The time has come to teach such people a lesson. Taking aim at former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, he said, let me tell you clearly, Mamata Banerjee is no longer the Chief Minister. You had a weak Chief Minister and for years you said and did whatever you wanted. This won’t happen anymore.
Dangerous game to divide Muslim voters
The Chief Minister told the House that two special FIRs have already been registered against Humayun Kabir under various rules of the Indian Justice Code (BNS).
Shubhendu Adhikari also gave a political justification for Kabir’s alleged behaviour, according to him, the MLA failed in his attempts to break the elected panchayats in Bharatpur, Rejinagar and Nawda and influence them politically. He further alleged that by-elections are likely to be held in Rejinagar in the next two to three months and Kabir is trying to strengthen the Muslim vote bank of the area in favor of his son. The Chief Minister alleged, “A dangerous game is being played to divide the approximately 72 percent Muslim voters of that area.”
Subhendu Adhikari will go to Murshidabad next week
Recalling the fate of many influential musclemen who broke the law in the past, Subhendu Adhikari warned Kabir that he should “think 25 times before speaking.”
Without naming anyone directly, he referred to leaders of Sandeshkhali, Canning and Phalata, claiming that those who once displayed political clout ultimately had to face legal consequences. Concluding his statement, the Chief Minister gave a final warning to the Assembly.
He said, “The Constitution of India and the law are the final say. I am going to Murshidabad next week and will establish the rule of law there, those who have called you will be dealt with first, and then I will come to you.”
