Till a few months ago, US President Donald Trump was talking about pulling America out of NATO and was openly criticizing European countries. But in the meeting of NATO leaders held in Turkey’s capital Ankara, their tone appeared to have completely changed. According to Reuters, Trump told allies, “We want to be with you.” He also assured that America will continue supplying arms to NATO countries. The question is, why was there such a big change in Trump’s stance and what happened in this meeting?
What did Trump say in the closed door meeting?
According to Reuters report, in the closed-door meeting of NATO leaders held in Ankara, Donald Trump clearly said, “We want to be with you.” According to sources, he also said that America is ready to sell weapons to NATO allied countries and this sale will not be affected by how those weapons are used. However, the White House did not immediately give any official response to Trump’s comments.
No debate on Iran, Spain and Greenland
Trump did not mention many of his earlier controversial issues in the meeting. According to Reuters, Trump neither repeated his criticism of Spain’s defense spending nor raised his statement about the end of the interim ceasefire with Iran. The issue of Greenland also did not come up for discussion, whereas in recent months this topic had become a cause of tension within NATO. After the conference, Trump said that there was “a lot of love and unity” in the meeting and called it a wonderful meeting.
Earlier there was talk of separation, now there is assurance of living together.
This statement of Trump is also considered important because he had been publicly criticizing NATO for the last several months. In April, he said that he was seriously considering pulling America out of NATO and also expressed his displeasure with the defense spending of European countries. But this time in the joint declaration of the NATO summit, all the leaders including Trump reiterated their commitment to collective security under Article 5. Along with this, European allies and Canada also announced new investment of more than 50 billion dollars in defense procurement and military aid of 70 billion euros for Ukraine in 2026. Apart from this, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte supported America’s military attacks on Iran and called them a necessary step.
