It has been more than three years since the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s drone attacks have reached many big cities of Russia. Due to these attacks, problems like fuel shortage, internet shutdown have increased in Russia and common people have also started getting troubled by the war. Recently, Russian President Vladimir Putin admitted that Ukraine’s drone attacks have increased problems in the country. But, he made it clear that he would not back down from his conditions to end the war.
Due to the prolonged war between Russia and Ukraine, resentment has started increasing among the common people of Russia, because people are facing many kinds of problems. With Ukraine’s drones reaching big cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg, concerns about security have increased among people. Parliamentary elections are to be held in Russia in September. In such a situation, the challenge before the Kremlin is how to handle the public anger. At present, people’s anger is not directed directly at Putin, but at the ruling United Russia Party.
Trust in Putin has decreased
The popularity of Russia’s ruling party United Russia is continuously declining. The support rating of the party is said to be around 30 percent. Despite this, this time the party has started openly associating itself with President Putin. Posters like ‘Being with Putin is the minimum responsibility’ were put up in the party meeting and for the first time since 2007 it described itself as ‘the President’s party’. The party is using Putin’s name and face to increase its popularity. However, surveys show that people’s trust is not the same as before. According to FOM, a Kremlin-linked survey institute, trust in Putin has fallen to 69 percent, which is considered to be the lowest level since the war started in 2022.
refused the offer
Experts also say that Ukraine several times proposed a limited ceasefire so that long-range drone and missile attacks could stop. But, Putin has not accepted this. They believe that if they make any compromise, Russia will appear weak and its advantage in the war may be lost. Therefore they want to continue the fight at any cost. This is the reason why at present the possibility of peace seems less.
People’s anger increased
Problems like internet shutdown and fuel shortage in Russia have further increased people’s anger. However, it is not easy to openly oppose the government there, because expressing disagreement can lead to strict action. That’s why most people are not able to express their displeasure openly. Political experts say that if the war continues for a long time and everyday problems continue to increase, it may become more difficult for the government to handle the situation in the future.
