Recently a surprising sight of nature was seen in the sky of Tibet. on social media viral In the video being shot, pillars of mysterious red light were seen falling from the clouds amidst the fierce storm. What looks like something from a science fiction movie is actually ‘Red Sprites’ (Red Sprites) is called. Let us know what are these red lights falling from the sky and why are they seen.
What are these red sprites? (What is Red Sprites?)
In simple words, this is a kind of very rare celestial lightning, but it is completely different from ordinary lightning. Usually the lightning we see falls between the clouds or from the clouds towards the ground. Whereas, Red Sprites thunder at an altitude of about 50 to 90 kilometers from the earth, i.e. in the upper part of the atmosphere.
Scientists call these transient luminous events (TTE). They appear in the sky in shapes like jellyfish, carrots, big pillars or spreading branches of trees. The sight seen in Tibet in the past was one of its most beautiful and biggest forms.
Why are they red in colour?
When strong lightning flashes in the clouds near the ground, a powerful electric field is created in the upper atmosphere. This current collides with the molecules of nitrogen gas present in the air and this causes bright red light to emerge. These red pillars can be several kilometers long in the sky, but disappear in the blink of an eye. But red sprites are captured in the camera, as seen in the viral video. Why was this scene seen only in Tibet?
Tibet is called the roof of the world. Due to its high altitude, clear sky and very little light pollution, the weather here is perfect for observing movements in the upper atmosphere.
