The travel bug is inside all of us, isn’t it? Just need an excuse and pack the bag. Going to a new place, breathing the air there, eating local food… the heart becomes happy, but friend, there is one thing. When we go to another city and stay in someone’s house or AirBnb, then there is some responsibility also. Think, it is someone’s own house, not a hotel room. We should also treat it like our own home…but to be honest, not everyone understands this. Some people leave all the garbage behind while checking out. One such incident came to light recently. An AirBnb owner shared her experience on Instagram, and the video was really disgusting to watch.
This post was posted by Saurav and Arpita from a page named ‘Two Keys Together’. In the caption he wrote from the heart. The first line was, remember, this is not a hotel. This is someone’s house, and the people who clean are not robots. This is absolutely correct. He further wrote that yes, you are giving money, but it does not mean that you can spread garbage wherever you want. Small hosts like us don’t have a big housekeeping team. The condition that is found every time after the guest leaves, it takes extra time, energy and also money from the pocket. At least some basic civic sense should be shown.
What is shown in this video?
What was seen in the video was really shocking. The whole house is a mess. Food stains on the bed, garbage on the floor, bathroom in poor condition. This means that a beautiful, well-furnished AirBnb was turned into a warehouse by the guests. After watching the video, I understood why the host was so hurt.
Now people’s comments on this post are also funny. Two types of people were found. Some people supported the host. He said, brother, if you have given money then you have not bought cleanliness. At least put the garbage in the dustbin, keep the utensils in the sink. This much can be done. Whereas some people were instead narrating to the host. He said that when one is in this business one has to bear all this. This is part of the job, why are you complaining? One or two even suggested that you should take a refundable security charge. If the guest litters then deduct the money.
Look, both sides have their own point of view. The pain of the host is understandable. He is sharing his personal space with you, and that too with the full expectation that you will take care of him. There is a difference between hotel and home-stay. The hotel is staffed 24 hours a day, housekeeping on every floor. But most of the people running AirBnb manage everything themselves. If they have to wash an extra bedsheet or remove a stain from the sofa, their entire day gets ruined.
On the other hand, the guest also has the point that we have paid the cleaning fee. But cleaning fee means normal cleaning like dusting, mopping, cleaning the bathroom. This does not mean that you spread packets of chips, cold drink bottles, used tissues all over the room and say ‘clean it’.
Actually this is a matter of common sense. How do we live in our house? Use them to put things in their place, right? That’s all to do. Take 5 minutes before check-out. Collect garbage in a bag. Hang wet towels in the bathroom. Put dirty utensils in the sink. That’s enough. The host will also like it and the place will soon be ready for the next guest.
Nowadays the culture of solo travel, work, babymoon is increasing. Be it Leh-Ladakh or Goa, we go for experience. So why not leave a good experience behind too? So that when we book again tomorrow, the host will happily welcome us.
