While booking train tickets from IRCTC, we often fill information like name, age and gender. Many times small mistakes are made in haste. Generally, TTE ignores minor mistakes in name spelling, but if age or gender is entered wrongly, the matter can become serious. One such case has come to light, where a passenger had to pay a fine of more than Rs 7,000 because of wrong age in the ticket.
This incident happened while traveling from Bengaluru to Nagpur. While sharing his experience on social media, a passenger named Ramakant said that he was traveling in 2AC coach of Rajdhani Express (train number 22691) on 23 June 2026. During the journey, at the time of ticket checking, the TTE checked his ticket and then asked him to travel in the pantry car. According to Ramakant, after reaching there the TTE asked him to deposit an additional Rs 7,035. In the beginning he did not understand why such a huge amount was being asked for. When he tried to find out the reason and started recording the video for his own safety, the TTE stopped him from recording also.
What went wrong?
Later, during checking, he came to know that he had made a big mistake while booking the ticket. He had mistakenly recorded his age as 1 year instead of 24 years. However, this was a completely unintentional mistake and due to this wrong age, he did not get any discount or benefit in the fare. Ramakant says that during the journey he had all the necessary government identity cards, in which his name and correct age were clearly recorded. That means there was no dispute regarding his identity. Despite this, the railway officials considered the tickets to be wrong and took action against them.
He told that the price of his 2AC ticket was Rs 3,589. But after adding the fine, he had to pay a total of Rs 10,624. Regarding this whole matter, he tagged the Railway Ministry and IRCTC on social media and raised the question whether such a huge fine for such a small mistake is right as per the rules of the Railways? He also said that he has all the necessary things like copy of EFT, payment receipt, photographs and video recording, which can be shared if needed.
After this Ramakant also lodged a complaint against RailMadad. After investigating the complaint, the Railways replied that during the ticket checking, the actual age of the passenger and the age recorded in the ticket were not matching. Railways said that it is the responsibility of the passengers to check all the information carefully after booking the ticket. Railways also said in its reply that if there is any mistake in name, age or other information in the ticket, it can be rectified by visiting the nearest PRS counter before the chart is prepared and the journey starts. But in this case the passenger had not rectified his mistake before starting the journey.
For this reason, the Railways accepted that the passenger was traveling without a correct ticket. Taking action under Section 138 of the Railway Act, 1989, a fine of Rs 7,035 was collected from him. Railways also clarified that this amount was taken through EFT number 0225318 and the ticket checking staff took action as per the existing rules. This case is a big lesson for all those who book train tickets online.
