The matter of lighting lamps on the hill of Thiruparankundram in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu remains in the news. After the High Court’s decision in January, the DIPAM dispute has now reached the Supreme Court. The state government has moved the Supreme Court challenging the Madras High Court order which had given permission to light lamps on top of a stone pillar near a dargah on Thiruparankundram hill. BJP says that Vijay led TVK government of the state is also anti-Sanatan.
The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state attacked the state government and said that it will not tolerate tampering with the faith of Hindu religion. While talking to news agency PTI, BJP leader Shehzad Poonewala targeted the Tamil Nadu government and said that Hindu religion has been given the status of second citizen under Vijay’s rule. He further said that the ruling TVK party led by Vijay is nothing but a mask of the DMK party which is also anti-Sanatan.
Poonewala said that no party in Tamil Nadu cares about the faith of Hindu religion. No MLA, minister and even the Chief Minister of the state has supported lighting the Karthikai lamp on the hill. This kind of attitude shows that no leader there cares about the feelings and faith of Hindus. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi is also involved in this.
Change CM, not Hindu ideology: Poonewala
Expressing displeasure at the government, Poonewala said that even after the decision of the single and then double division bench of the Madras High Court, the TVK government seems dissatisfied with lighting the lamp on the Tirupparankundram hill. Now the state government has moved the Supreme Court against the High Court’s decision, which completely shows that this is a step taken against Sanatani Hindus. The nature of this government is anti-Hindu. The governments of Tamil Nadu used Hindus only as a vote bank. He cautioned that the people of the state need to change the Chief Minister, not the Hindu ideology.
This case is related to the petition filed by Hindu Dharma Parishad regarding burning of lamp post, in which the organization has challenged the decision of Madras High Court in the Supreme Court. In the petition, many important demands have been made regarding the Tiruparankundram temple and the religious rights related to it.
‘Deepam controversy’ now in Supreme Court
This special leave petition has been filed on behalf of the Tamil Nadu government against the order of January 6 of the Division Bench of Madras High Court (Madurai Bench). In this order, the order given by the Single Bench in December last year was upheld, in which permission was given to burn ‘Kartigai Deepam’ at that place.
The state’s petition in the Supreme Court was filed on June 11, when the new government led by TVK’s Vijay took charge. The High Court order was passed on writ petitions filed by people who sought the right to light lamps on ‘Deepa Thoon’ (stone lamp pillars) atop the Thiruparankundram hills. This place is about 50 meters away from a dargah situated on the hill.
The state HR&CE department, which manages the Lord Subramanya temple below the hill, opposed the petition, arguing that there is no tradition of lighting the lamp on ‘Deepa Thoon’, as it was traditionally lit at another place.
