Google’s big network

How did Google know that? Earthquake is coming? The answer is related to your smartphone. Every modern smartphone has an accelerometer sensor. Generally, the accelerometer is the sensor that automatically rotates the screen when you hold your phone in landscape mode. But it also has another use, it can detect and measure vibrations.

How does Google Alert work?

When your smartphone detects vibrations that could be caused by an earthquake, it sends a signal to Google’s Android Earthquake Alerts System, along with the approximate location of where it occurred.

After this, Google’s servers combine the information received from many phones to find out whether an earthquake is coming. That is, when a smartphone sends such a signal, the server can also see information about other phones in that area. If enough phones detect similar vibrations, Google knows that an earthquake is about to happen and, thus, can send an alert. Google has more than 2 billion Android phones that are part of this network. This makes it the world’s largest distributed seismograph i.e. earthquake detection system.

Google Earthquake Alert: How to turn on settings in Android and iPhone

Go to the settings of your Android phone and search by entering Earthquake Alert in the search bar. When the results appear, check whether the setting is on or not. If the setting is off then turn it on immediately. For iPhone users, tap Notifications in Settings, scroll down to the bottom, and turn on the alert type to Government Alerts.
