Veerbhadra Katha: Veerbhadra who had cut off the head of Prajapati Daksh, know how he was born

June 8, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Veerabhadra Story: The fierce forms of Mahadev have been explained in detail in Hindu religious scriptures and Shiva Purana. Among the fierce forms of Mahadev, the forms of Kaal Bhairav Dev and Veerbhadra are considered prominent. The story of the origin of Veerbhadra, the fierce form of Lord Shiva, is one of the most powerful episodes. This form of Lord Shiva originated during the Yaksha of Prajapati Daksh, when Mahadev was angry after the sacrifice of Mother Sati.

Prajapati Daksh was the mental son of Lord Brahma. He was the father of Mother Sati. According to the legend, once Prajapati Daksh organized a huge yagya. In this Yagya, he invited all the Gods and Goddesses, but did not invite Lord Shiva and Sati, but Mother Sati insisted on going to her father’s place. Mahadev explained to her, but the mother did not agree and reached her father’s place without calling.

Sati committed self-immolation

Prajapati Daksh insulted Lord Shiva a lot in front of Mother Sati who had reached the Yagya. Mother Sati could not bear the insult of her husband and sacrificed her life by jumping into the same sacrificial fire. When Mahadev got the news of Sati’s self-immolation, he was filled with anger. Shiva uprooted one of his locks, shining like lightning and flame, and threw it on the earth.

As soon as his hair fell on the earth, it broke into two parts. According to Shiva Purana, from the main body appeared an extremely huge warrior with a thousand arms, armed with a trident and sword and as fierce as Kaal. He was called the Veerbhadra form of Lord Shiva. Veerbhadra also became the master of Shiva’s qualities. Bhadrakali, the goddess of great destruction and protector, appeared from the other part of the hair.

Virbhadra had cut off Daksh’s head

Lord Shiva ordered Veerbhadra and Bhadrakali to immediately go and destroy Daksh’s yagya. Then both the superpowers along with the army of Shiva attacked Daksh’s Yagya Mandap. Veerbhadra also stopped the speed of Sudarshan Chakra of Lord Vishnu. At last, Prajapati Daksh’s head was cut off and thrown into the Yagya Kund. Then, on the prayer of Lord Brahma, Shiva sacrificed his life to Daksh by impaling him with the head of a goat.
