July 30, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Vastu tips for old items: Whenever we buy second-hand goods, only one question arises in our mind whether it is inauspicious or not. In fact, according to Vastu Shastra, old furniture or items bring with them the atmosphere of the previous house, the energy of the person who used it and old memories. It is believed that they can have an impact on the environment of the house and the life of the family, hence it is advisable to adopt some Vastu related measures before bringing old items home.

cleaning with salt

If you are going to use someone’s old furniture or other items, clean them thoroughly first. According to Vastu Shastra, cleaning by mixing salt in water removes negative energy.

sunlight

Sunlight is considered the most powerful for purification. In such a situation, old items should be kept in sunlight for at least a day. The strong rays of the sun can completely destroy the old and negative energy present in those objects.

sprinkling of ganga water

Ganga water is considered extremely sacred and pure in Hindu religion and Vastu Shastra. It has the power to destroy negative energy.

Use of camphor and frankincense

Camphor and frankincense are used in large quantities to remove negative energy from the house. In such a situation, Bhimseni camphor or frankincense should be burnt near old items. Its smoke works to remove blocked energy and increase positive energy.

painting old furniture

According to Vastu Shastra, painting old furniture gives it a new look and reduces the effect of old energy, hence if possible, painting furniture is considered auspicious.

Ringing of bells to initiate auspicious rituals

There is a tradition of ringing bells during puja at home. In Vastu Shastra, it is believed that the sound of the bell removes negative energy and brings positivity, hence ringing the bell after puja before keeping new or old items in the house is considered auspicious.
