Varanasi: ‘Varanasi’ is the second most expensive film in the history of Indian cinema. Which is being made with a huge budget of Rs 1200 crore. Work on the film has been going on for a long time, which is being made by SS Rajamouli. Meanwhile, Mahesh Babu is playing the lead role in the film. Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran are also with him. Currently Mahesh Babu has gone on a break and will start shooting again soon. However, Rajamouli has not finalized anything yet, be it theatrical or non-theatrical deal. But meanwhile, Netflix India’s Content Vice President Monica Shergill has pointed towards the OTT deal of the film. Due to which it is being considered almost confirmed and it is being said that things have been confirmed.
I found out a long time ago that Rajamouli And Mahesh Babu has not taken any fees for the film. They are dealing on profit sharing model. However, the responsibility of the film’s deals is also on Rajamouli, hence he is taking steps very thoughtfully. Because the budget of this film itself is Rs 1200-1300 crores. Recently, when the Content Vice President of Netflix India was asked about the streaming rights of Varanasi, he said, “Some things should remain a surprise in the future.”
What hint did you get from Netflix?
The whole affair started with the trailer launch of Netflix’s first Telugu original series ‘Super Subbu’. At that time, Monica Shergill, Content Vice President of Netflix India was also present there. While talking, he said something about ‘Varanasi’ that that statement went viral. The Content Vice President was asked whether Netflix has bought the streaming rights of ‘Varanasi’. So first Monica smiled and then said – “Some things should remain a surprise for the future.” If nothing had been confirmed, she might have replied no or avoided the issue. But his answer has almost made it clear that Netflix has won the battle.
During this, when he was told that Rajamouli’s ‘Baahubali’ franchise and ‘RRR’ have reached the audience all over the world only through Netflix. To this his reply was – “The best stories and greatest creators are always on Netflix.” However, no official announcement has been made yet by the makers or Netflix. But the hint has been found. What is even more special is that Netflix must have bought it at record breaking prices. Let us tell you that Netflix had bought the streaming rights of RRR under a big multi-language digital and satellite deal. Whose price was said to be Rs 325 crore. Now the deal must have been big for Varanasi also.
