Talks between America and Iran seem to be progressing towards ending the war and reaching a permanent peace agreement. US Ambassador Steve Witkoff and Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are leaving for talks to be held in Switzerland. This meeting is taking place at a time when the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has come into force in Lebanon.
The increasing fighting between Israel and Hezbollah had raised questions on US-Iran talks for some time. But after the ceasefire came into effect on Friday, the path to talks has opened again. It is believed that now both the countries will try to convert the interim agreement into a permanent peace agreement.
Attempt to reach final agreement in 60 days
This week America and Iran had signed a 14-point MoU. Under this agreement, both the countries have to try to reach a final agreement on Iran’s nuclear program and other disputed issues within 60 days.
Earlier, US Vice President JD Vance was also to visit Switzerland, but due to increasing tension in Lebanon, he canceled his visit. After this, the White House had said that the date and program of the technical talks have not been fully decided yet. Now after the implementation of the ceasefire, American Ambassador Steve Witkoff is going to Switzerland. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner is already there. Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi will reach there on Saturday.
Which issues will be discussed?
Many issues will be discussed in the talks to be held in Switzerland. These include Iran’s nuclear program, conflict in Lebanon, economic sanctions and topics related to regional security. Under the agreement, Iran can get facilities like relief in economic sanctions, access to frozen assets worth billions of dollars, exemption of oil exports and a reconstruction fund of $300 billion. Oil supply from the Strait of Hormuz has also started increasing again. Iran has said that it will not impose any toll on ships for 60 days.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump defended the agreement and said that Iran has been weakened by the war and America did not make this agreement under any pressure. Now the world is eyeing the talks for the next 60 days, which will decide whether this temporary agreement turns into permanent peace or not.
