UPI rules changed in June, turn on these 5 settings immediately otherwise losses may occur

June 3, 2026 by Uma Shankar

From June 1, 2026, new rules have come into effect to make UPI payments more secure than before. Now features like biometric authentication and name verification before payment have been included in big transactions. However, just relying on the new rules is not enough. If you want to avoid UPI fraud and online fraud, then you should immediately turn on some important security settings in phone and banking apps. A small carelessness can cause huge financial loss to you. Here we are telling you 5 such settings which can help you in protecting yourself from digital fraud.

New security features added to UPI payments

The government has implemented several important changes to strengthen UPI security from June 2026. Now, during large value online transactions, UPI PIN alone will not suffice, but biometric authentication like fingerprint or Face ID will also be used. Its purpose is to ensure that even if a person gets the information of UPI PIN, he cannot make payment without the permission of the owner. Apart from this, now while making payment on any number, the name of the person in front will also be visible. This can reduce the possibility of sending money to the wrong account or committing fraud through fake identity. All these changes are being implemented at the system level. Let us now know those 5 settings which you should always keep on.

1. Turn on biometric lock on phone and UPI app

If your phone has the facility of fingerprint or face unlock, then definitely keep it active. Also, turn on biometric authentication in Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or banking apps. With this, no one will be able to open the UPI app even if they get hold of your phone. Biometric security has become more important than ever under the new UPI security rules.

2. Keep banking and payment apps in hidden folders

Most smartphones have the option to hide apps or keep them in a hidden folder. This folder can be locked with a different password or PIN. By keeping banking and UPI apps here, no unknown person will be able to find them easily. This is a simple but effective layer of additional security.

3. Always keep all banking notifications on

Many people turn off notifications, due to which information about suspicious transactions is not received in time. Always keep the notifications of bank and UPI apps on and if you want, even set a separate ringtone for them. With this, you will get an immediate alert as soon as money is withdrawn from the account and in case of any fraud, immediate action can be taken.

4. Set a daily transaction limit

Set a maximum limit for sending money daily in your banking or UPI app. For example, if your daily expenditure is up to Rs 10,000 then do not keep the limit more than that. Due to this, even if for some reason your account or phone reaches the wrong hands, the loss will be limited and a large amount cannot be transferred at once.

5. Keep international payment and UPI transactions closed

If you are not traveling abroad or do not make international payments, it is better to keep the international transactions feature turned off. Many banks and UPI apps provide this option. Keeping it off when not needed provides additional security to the account and reduces the risk of potential fraud related to foreign transactions.
