The use of digital payments is continuously increasing in India and in May 2026, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has created a new record. According to National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) data, transactions worth Rs 29.90 lakh crore were made through UPI in May. The total number of transactions reached 23.2 billion, which is the largest figure till date. Experts believe that summer holidays, increased travel and increased expenditure during IPL 2026 have played an important role in making this record. It is clear from this that the scope of digital payments is continuously increasing in India.
UPI usage reached record level in May
According to PTI report, according to the latest data of NPCI, transactions worth Rs 29.90 lakh crore were registered through UPI in May 2026. In April this figure was Rs 29.03 lakh crore, whereas in May a year ago the total transaction value was Rs 25.14 lakh crore. In this way, an increase of about 19 percent has been recorded on annual basis. UPI also created a new record in terms of number of transactions and 23.2 billion transactions were recorded in May. In April 2026 this number was 22.35 billion.
IPL and summer travel increased digital payments
According to Akash Sinha, co-founder and CEO of Cashfree Payments, the May figures show strong and natural demand. He said that increased consumer spending during summer holidays, travel and IPL 2026 helped push UPI transactions to new heights. People used UPI extensively for many purposes like ticket booking, hotel, food and online shopping. This was the reason that both transaction number and value touched record levels in May. Experts believe that this pace of digital payments may continue in the coming months also.
The scope of UPI is increasing in India as well as abroad.
According to the Payment System Report of the Reserve Bank, the average ticket size of UPI was Rs 1,848 in 2021, which has come down to Rs 1,313 by 2025. However, experts consider this not a matter of concern but a sign of a strong and maturing ecosystem. UPI is no longer limited to India only and is available in many countries including UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal and Mauritius. Akash Sinha says that Credit on UPI and Cross Border UPI will become new opportunities for growth in the coming times. With this, the scope of digital payments is expected to increase even faster.
