Umar Khalid, accused in the Delhi violence case, has been granted interim bail. Delhi High Court has granted interim bail to Omar from June 1 to 3. Umar is in jail under the UAPA law in a conspiracy case related to the Delhi riots of February 2020. The bench of Justice Pratibha M Singh and Justice Madhu Jain gave this decision on Friday. He was given this relief so that he could spend time with his mother, because her mother has to undergo surgery.
The court said that the Supreme Court has already rejected the regular bail plea of Omar Khalid on January 5. Despite this, the High Court decided to give him three days’ relief on humanitarian grounds. The court said that on the basis of sympathy, he is being granted bail for some time. Additional Solicitor General S.V. appeared in the court on behalf of Delhi Police. Raju said that the surgery of Umar Khalid’s mother was minor. He suggested that if needed, Umar could be allowed to meet his mother under police protection.
Umar had asked for 15 days bail
The High Court was hearing the appeal of Umar Khalid, in which he had challenged the decision of the Karkardooma Court. On May 19, the trial court had rejected his demand for interim bail. Umar Khalid had sought interim bail for 15 days. He had told the court that he had to participate in the 40-day ritual to be held after the death of his uncle. Besides, one has to take care of the mother during her surgery. But the trial court had said that it is not so important to participate in the uncle’s ritual. The court had also said that other members of the family could take care of his mother.
What is the allegation against Omar?
Umar Khalid is accused of conspiring the North-East Delhi riots of February 2020. 53 people died and more than 700 people were injured in these riots. This violence took place during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act i.e. CAA and NRC. In this case, a case has been registered against many people including Sharjeel Imam, Khalid Saifi and former AAP councilor Tahir Hussain. The case is being investigated by the Special Cell of Delhi Police. Earlier, on September 2, 2025, the Delhi High Court had rejected the bail plea of Umar Khalid and other accused. Later the Supreme Court also accepted that decision as correct.
