Udta Bihar: How much has the dry drug business increased in 10 years? Understand from the figures after prohibition

There is prohibition in Bihar, but even after 10 years, incidents of liquor smuggling and drinking continue. There have been frequent cases of deaths due to poisonous liquor. Amidst all this, the trend of dry intoxicants i.e. drugs has increased rapidly in Bihar. From cities to rural areas, ganja, smack, doda, charas, codeine cough syrup and other drugs are being recovered. Both alcohol and drugs have become a menace for the government and society.

According to the data released by Bihar Police, till May in the year 2026, 21,024.37 KG ganja, 54.048 KG charas, 51.9 KG heroin, brown sugar and smack, 59.351 KG opium, 3,45,309 injections, 9,06,907 tablets and capsules, 2,82,960 bottles of codeine cough syrup were seized among the drugs. Has been done. During this period, action was taken against 89 alleged drug smugglers under the PIT-NDPS Act. On a question asked on 27 March 2018 regarding the recovery and use of drugs across the country, the Home Ministry had said.

How much dry intoxicant was used before liquor ban in Bihar and after liquor ban?

  • Year 2015: 14.37 kg ganja, 1.12 kg heroin and 1.97 kg opium were seized, no hashish was recovered.
  • Year 2016: The year of prohibition, 10800 KG Ganja, 115.81 KG Hashish, 0.04 KG Heroin, 14.98 Opium seized.
  • Year 2017: 28887.62 KG ganja, 243.51 kg hashish, 7.56 kg heroin, 328.85 kg opium were found.

How much will the use of dry intoxicants increase in Bihar by the year 2025?

In the year 2025, about 28,000 kg ganja, 60 kg heroin, 2,400 kg opium and poppy straw, 3.25 lakh codeine cough syrup bottles and 3.48 lakh intoxicating tablets have been recovered in Bihar. During this period, 2,161 cases were registered and 3,520 people were arrested for alleged smuggling and use of dry drugs. This information was given by the then Deputy CM and present Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary on a question.

Why is Bihar getting trapped in the trap of drug addiction?

  • From 2015 to 2026, the use of dry intoxicants and drugs has increased manifold in Bihar. In fact, a section started using smack, ganja, brown sugar and drugs as an alternative to alcohol.
  • Bihar has about 700 kilometers of open border with Nepal. Drug smugglers use it to enter dry drugs into Bihar. Border districts like Kishanganj, Araria, Madhubani, Sitamarhi and Supaul are turning into drug transit corridors.
  • Drugs are continuously being smuggled into Bihar from Bengal, Jharkhand and other North-Eastern states. Smugglers are being caught smuggling drugs in large quantities from the border areas of these states adjacent to Bihar.
  • Due to issues like unemployment, migration and social tension, youth are also turning to drugs. A large number of patients coming to de-addiction centers are youth aged 18-35 years. The reach of drugs has also increased rapidly at school and college level. Complaints are also coming continuously about this.
  • Even after prohibition, liquor is being recovered continuously in Bihar. This clearly means that liquor is still available in Bihar, but one has to pay a higher price for it. At the same time, small packets of smack, intoxicating pills, cough syrup are available at cheap rates.
  • Transporting dry drugs is easy. Its large consignment can be dumped in or around a city. Then from there it is delivered to the suppliers operating in different areas. At the same time, there are many different challenges in liquor smuggling.

The number of AIDS patients infected by drug injection also increased.

There has also been an increase in the cases of taking drugs through ejection in Bihar. Till May this year, 3,45,309 injections have been seized. The number of AIDS patients is also increasing due to the use of injections. According to a report of AIDS Control Society, there are a total of 1.06 lakh HIV patients in Bihar. Among these, there are 11,836 people who have been infected due to drug addiction. In fact, many people are found intoxicating with the same syringe. During this period, if even one person gets infected with HIV, then the chances of many other people also getting infected increases.
