May 28, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Tungnath Temple History: There are 12 Jyotirlingas and many ancient temples of Lord Shiva in India, where devotees come to see Mahadev, but one Shiva temple is situated at the highest place in the world. The name of this temple is Tunganath Shiv Temple. The religious importance of Tunganath temple is very high. The ancient Tunganath temple of Lord Shiva is on a high mountain in Rudraprayag district of Garhwal, Uttarakhand. This temple is included in Panch Kedar. Lankapati Ravana also did penance at this place.

This temple is situated at an altitude of 3,680 meters (12,073 feet). There is a religious belief that this temple was built by the Pandavas. It is believed that Lord Shiva was angry with the Pandavas regarding the massacre in Kurukshetra. Pandavas also wanted to repent for their actions, so they set out in search of Lord Shiva. When Lord Shiva came to know that Pandavas were searching for him, he started hiding. Pandavas chased Lord Shiva and reached Kedar.

Lord Shiva’s arms emerged here

After this, Lord Shiva took the form of a bull and sat there among the animals. When Bhima became suspicious, he grabbed the back of Shiva in the form of a bull. Then Lord Shiva kept increasing his size. After this, the place where the Lord’s back remained became Kedarnath and the place where his arms emerged became Tunganath. Similarly, all these places together with Kedarnath are called Panch Kedar.

Ravana had pleased Shiva by doing penance.

Tungnath is also said to be related to the Ramayana period. According to beliefs, this is the same place where Ravana did penance to please Lord Shiva. Not only this, after killing Ravana, Lord Shri Ram also meditated at Chandrashila, one and a half kilometers away from Tunganath and spent some time alone there. There is a religious belief that by visiting Panch Kedar along with Baba Kedar, one attains salvation.
