US President Donald Trump has recently issued a new order to AI companies by signing an executive order. The Trump government has asked developers of big AI companies to give the government early access to the system before public release. In simple words, the AI Executive Order creates a framework for the US government to test the most advanced AI systems before they are released to the public. This directive posted on the White House website has been described as a voluntary collaboration with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft and other tech companies. No company is being forced to participate under this order because it is a voluntary arrangement, in which AI companies can choose the option of working with agencies on their own will.
According to the order, the Trump Administration has asked US agencies to work together with AI companies so that incidents like AI cyber attacks can be avoided. The US government will receive AI models just 30 days before public release so that the government will be able to test the capabilities of the AI models. The June 2 executive order has reduced the government review period for models from the previous 90 days to a maximum of 30 days.
Why was it not signed on May 20, what was Trump worried about?
Trump was expected to introduce the order about two weeks ago, but it was postponed hours before the planned signing ceremony. The executive order was initially scheduled to be signed in a hastily arranged ceremony at the White House on May 20, but Donald Trump canceled the planned signing ceremony at the last minute. He told reporters that he did not like some aspects of the directive and was concerned that it would reduce America’s competitiveness against China in the AI race.
