In a blow to President Donald Trump, the US Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected his attempt to ban birthright citizenship in the United States. This right has long been a part of American society, making it a blow to one of their biggest priorities in their crackdown on immigration. With a 6-3 decision, this is the second time this year that the court has invalidated any major initiative of Trump, earlier in February a decision was taken to eliminate his big global tariff.
According to Reuters news agency, the judges upheld a lower court ruling that blocked Trump’s executive order directing US agencies not to recognize the citizenship of children born in the United States whose parents are not US citizens or legal permanent residents, also known as “green card” holders.
Challengers to Trump’s order argued that it violates the language of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution, which grants citizenship to people born in the United States “subject to the jurisdiction thereof.”
