What’s in the deal?
On Wednesday, a senior American official read out the draft of the deal to journalists. Under this, there is a plan to quickly reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which has been closed for months. Due to this bandh, energy prices had increased significantly across the world. This draft also talks about immediate relaxation of the sanctions imposed on Iranian oil.
After this there will be talks on nuclear issues and possible additional economic benefits to Iran. Once the deal is implemented, the focus will be on shipping companies, which had largely stopped sending their ships through the strait due to the blockade by both the US and Iran. Trump had earlier said that a deal would be signed on June 19 so that any mines in the strait could be removed. In this draft, it was said that Washington promises to immediately remove the oil sanctions that are weakening Iran’s economy.
Why a $300 billion fund?
According to the deal, once a final agreement is reached on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program, the US will also help release a $300 billion reconstruction fund to support regional countries.
Trump defended the $300 billion development program, again saying that it would not cost the US government any money and that Iran would benefit only if it ‘behaves right’. He also said that if Iran’s leaders do not follow the agreement, the US military will attack Iran again.
